For many decades the face of fashion has been the young, beautiful, tall and slim white woman. As the times change we have seen the recognition for the need of diversity has become more prominent.
There have been quite a few striking successes from global ad campaigns and brands that aren't afraid to celebrate the real diversity that exists in the world.
A report from looking at 460 ad campaigns showed that 84.7% of the models casted were white, however brands that excluded themselves from this large percentage were:
DIOR
Rihanna was Dior's first black campaign model in the history of Dior. The 27 year old, Barbadian urban singer featured in the fourth instalment of the Secret Garden campaign. You can watch the campaign film here
CELINE
The brand that has been highly scrutinized in the past have taken a leap of diversity and feature Karly Loyce from Martinique for their Autumn/Winter 15 campaign. The runway show saw more diversity with Karly, Lineisy Montero, Binx Walton (the face of Céline’s Spring 2014 campaign) walking in the show.
PHILIPP PLEIN
One of my favourite campaigns has to be the Spring/Summer 14 shot by Francesco Carrozzini for Philipp Plein. The S/S 14 runway show in Milan had a line-up of an all-black cast followed by an all-black campaign, which made a statement seeing as Milan is notorious for preferring white models.
WINNIE HARLOW
A boundary breaking model with the skin condition Vitiligo has starred in two major fashion campaigns with Diesel Spring/Summer 15 and Desigual 'Say Something Nice' campaign - as well being announced as their new brand ambassador.
